CAPTURING OLYMPIANS WITH SAMSUNG

2024 olympics Grace Choi

Ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics, technology innovator Samsung stepped up to support an impressive legion of athletes on their road to Paris. United by the slogan, “Open always wins!”, we banded together to craft national campaign videos and official photos for some of sports’ biggest stars.

There are few things we love more than building storylines in motion, so capturing the dynamic sports of surfing, skating, and break dancing all across the country was exhilarating. With tight turnarounds, several locations, and a need for specialized action shots, the johnnypuetz Productions team brought their A-game for these A-list Athletes:

John John Florence - Surfing in Honolulu, Hawaii

The johnnypuetz Productions crew made our way to Honolulu, Hawaii to catch up with expert surfer John John Florence (@john_john_florence). Whether we were constructing a mobile portrait studio or using our specialized camera water housing on the beach, our team adapted to meet the demands of the gorgeous and tropical climate of the island.

Our crew corresponded with Samsung from afar to keep the consistency needed across a national campaign.

The final cut interspersed mid-wave views, Q+As with Samsung, and branded motion graphics.

Jagger Eaton - Skating in San Diego, California

Next stop, we made our way to sunny California to film the incredible skater Jagger Eaton (@jaggereaton). We have plenty of experience capturing top-performing skaters, so taking a spin with Jagger felt like coming home.

We recreated a consistent lighting setup to get Jagger’s hero shots and then had a blast watching him work his magic on the board.

Using multiple cameras and our knack for producing fast yet clear frames led to a stunning photoset for Jagger’s Olympic path.

Grace “Sunny” Choi - Break Dancing in New York, NY

Being based in New York City comes with its perks– especially when you get to come in contact with talent like the groovy Grace Choi, otherwise known as “Sunny”. Grace (@_sunnychoi) blew us away with her moves, and her personality shines through effortlessly in her Samsung-partnered photos:

Combining natural and artificial lighting, we created the perfect backdrop for Grace’s skills, playing off of her lighting movement to let her dancing serve as the star of the show.

Managing multiple crews, locations, and assets for a national campaign can undoubtedly be a challenge, but we’re fortunate to have a team united in their diverse skill sets and storytelling prowess.

We couldn’t be more proud of these athletes and honored to represent their journey to the world’s most prestigious sporting event. Thank you to Samsung for supporting these young masters and partnering with johnnypuetz Productions to bring their stories to life.
